Crawford and Stelter win Region IV championships

Detroit Lakes junior Amy Crawford continues to blaze a path for the Minnesota Flyers Gymnastics club after qualifying for the 2010 Western Level 9 National Championships.

Crawford missed winning the Region IV all-around championship by .15 of a point, but claimed the vault title with a 9.025.

Her Flyer teammates, Jessica Stelter and Mathia Olds, also followed suit by having top-flight performances at the Regional meet, which was held in Kansas City, Mo.

Stelter claimed the Region IV Level 8 all-around championship with a 36.55, while also winning the vault title with a 9.475.

Olds finished ninth in vault and 12th on beam in a tough age group.

For Crawford, a fall beam to start the meet, didn't result in a tumbling effect.

Instead, the Flyer gymnast came back and scored a 9.0 or above in her next three events.

"It shows that you can have a bad event and still come back and do well," said Flyers head trainer/coach Sith Hansana. "With her physical abilities, Amy is also mentally tough, which plays a huge role in the sport of gymnastics."

The 2010 Level 9 Western National Championships will be held in Des Moines, Iowa, May 1-2.

Stelter also made her mark in Regionals, with her two gold medals.

"Jessica was in the zone," Hansana said. "She had a huge vault scoring a 9.475 to win the event. I set a goal for her on bars, which is a weak event for her, to get at least an 8.8.

"She scored a 9.025. What a great meet for her."

Hansana also credited Olds for picking up valuable time at Regionals.

"This was a great experience for her going into Level 9 for next season," Hansana included.
