Crawford medals at Nationals
Minnesota Flyers Gymnastics Amy Crawford made a nice Level 9 Westerns National Championships debut last weekend in Des Moines, Iowa.
Crawford finished her 2009-2010 gymnastics season on Sunday, May 2, and had a strong showing at the meet.
The Detroit Lakes junior nabbed a silver on bars, while tying for fourth on beam, 17th on floor and tied for 18th on vault.
Her 36.25 score all-around was just .75 from medaling with an eighth place finish.
She started out on the beam, where Crawford was the last competitor out of the six gymnasts that made up the Region 4 Team.
"I can see she was nervous and wanted to get the event done with," said Flyers head trainer Sith Hansana. "There were a couple of falls from her Region 4 teammates and we needed a big score for the team score."
Crawford responded by hitting a great beam routine, scoring a 9.300 and placing her tied for fourth in the event.
She scored a 9.000 on the floor and it was not her best performance, Hansana said.
"She was competing a new vault (Yurchenko layout)," he added. "She had some great warm up vaults, but scored an 8.700 with a fall.
"I knew she was a mentally tough gymnast. I told her, 'Let's move on from the vault and finish strong on the bars.'"
That's exactly what she did, as the Laker came back and hit the bars and scored a 9.250, placing her second in the event.
The top six gymnasts were medalists in each event and the all around.
Crawford ended her gymnastics season with a trip to the National Championships and laying claim to DLHS' first-ever Class 1A state gymnastics championship after she won beam earlier this spring.
