Crookston man charged with injuring infant set for trial in Grand Forks
GRAND FORKS -- The trial of a father accused of inflicting severe head injuries on his 4-week-old daughter is set to start March 23 in Grand Forks.
Steven Klein, 35, has pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempted murder or child abuse. He appeared at a pretrial conference Thursday.
Klein, who now lives in Crookston, was arrested in June after an investigation into the head injuries his daughter received in Grand Forks in August 2008.
A doctor with expertise in child abuse determined the girl's head trauma was not caused by an accident, according to an investigator's report.
Klein, who is no longer in custody, was convicted in 1994 of assaulting a 14-month-old in his care in Moorhead, leaving the child with severe head injuries.
Grand Forks County prosecutor Meredith Larson has made a motion to allow Klein's criminal record to be brought up during trial. The defense and prosecution are expected to argue the motion before a judge Feb. 12.
