Today is 30 years to the day of the tragic U.S. Marine Corps barracks truck bombing in Beirut, Lebanon.

The perpetrators of this dastardly act were members of Hezbollah, a Shiite Muslim extremist group created and financed by Iran.

Two hundred forty one (220 Marines, 18 Navy and three Army) were killed. Some of the Marines killed were sleeping in their racks. These 220 Marines were the highest Marine loss since World War II’s Iwo Jima.

We also must not forget that to most Islamic fundamentalists, past and present, the United States of America is “The Great Satan.”

In 1938 British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, now remembered for the failed plan of “peace in our time,” traveled to Munich, Germany to meet with Adolph Hitler. Look where that led. Be cautious with appeasement proceedings with the new leadership of Iran. — Thomas A. Frank, Detroit Lakes
