Adam Koenig, 22, of Park River, N.D., was arrested by police on charges of burglary and damage to property after he was found lying behind the till of a Holiday gas station.

According to police, officers responded to a report of a suspicious person with blood on his face standing outside the gas station around 3:42 a.m. When police arrived, they found one of the station's glass doors smashed in by a block ash tray.

Upon entering the store, they discovered Koenig lying on the floor behind the counter with his eyes closed and multiple injuries to his face. Koenig was wearing a badge on his belt and identified himself as a Walsh County sheriff's deputy.

Walsh County Sheriff Lauren Wild confirmed Koenig is a deputy with the office, but declined to comment.

Koenig is a 2012 graduate of the University of Minnesota-Crookston, where he studied criminal justice. He was hired in September, according to county records.

Koenig was taken to Riverview Health in Crookston where he was treated for his injuries. According to police, he may have been injured before entering the convenience store.

After treatment, Koenig was taken to Northwest Regional Corrections Center in Crookston.

The case remains under investigation.
