Detroit Lakes Bantam A's fall short in consolation shootout
The Detroit Lakes Bantam A team fell one goal short of winning their 16-team tournament's consolation title Saturday and Sunday inside the Kent Freeman Arena.
The Lakers fell in their first game against Fort Francis (Canada) 7-3, but rebounded with a 16-1 victory over Fargo Saturday morning.
DL continued to roll through consolation play with a 5-4 win over Bismarck, to put them in the consolation finals against the North St. Paul Polars.
Alex Mason notched DL's first goal in the second period during a power play to tie the game 1-1, which stayed that way until the final period.
St. Paul tallied a 2-1 lead with 4:10 remaining in regulation, but the Lakers were not finished, as Isaac Fondrick pulled off a late goal with five seconds remaining on an unassisted effort to force overtime.
The eight-minute overtime period resulted in no goals, as the game went into an exciting shootout to determine the outcome.
Each team sent out eight shooters, as St. Paul narrowly outshot the Lakers by a one-count margin.
The Rogers Royals won the tournament with a 5-2 win over Hopkins.
The DL Bantam A team will host the District 15 Tournament Feb. 20-22, inside Kent Freeman Arena.
