Detroit Lakes boys' b-ball hangs tough with Patriots
Some hot shooting by the visiting Pequot Lakes boys' basketball team was enough to tip the scales of victory towards the Patriots over the Detroit Lakes Lakers, by the score of 79-75 Tuesday night.
The Patriots piled on 51 points in the first half alone, behind the scoring of guard Nic Johnson and forward Michael Ward -- who each had 14 points before halftime.
The Lakers didn't fold up their tent, though, after trailing 51-38 at halftime; instead they battled back by outscoring the Pats (15-4) 37-28 in the second half to pull to within striking distance.
"We played a great, complete game," said DL head coach Robb Flint. "We just caught Pequot Lakes on a hot shooting night."
DL guard Tyler Fode had a career night, going for 19 points, with 13 of those coming in the second half.
Joe Mollberg joined Fode's hot hand in the second half, by pouring in 13 of his game-high 20 points after halftime.
Sophomore forward Josh Stalberger also hit for double digits, finishing with 13 points.
"Stalberger got us going with a great first half (nine points), and we didn't miss a beat with Zane Kotschevar's spark off the bench," Flint said.
Senior guard Reed Oistad also contributed eight assists.
Jonas Dale and Ward led Pequot Lakes with 18 points apiece, while Michael Goerges added 12 and Tomas Parker 11.
The Lakers (5-13) will travel to Mid-State Conference opponent Staples-Motley Friday for a 7:30 p.m. start.
