Detroit Lakes Boys Golf Preview
The two-time Class 2A state champions are back and they may be better and deeper than ever.
Although the third-consecutive state team championship is some distance away for the Detroit Lakes boys’ golf team, one can be certain the Lakers are gearing up for a dominant run through the 2013 season.
Afterall, they return their top three golfers from the 2012 state title team, while having up to nine quality letter winners back fighting for varsity spots.
“It’s going to come down to the end of the season to see what six will be playing in the section meet,” said DL head coach Bob Gorden. “We do have three top quality golfers, who could lead the way in any meet, too.”
Two-time state runner-up senior Karter Smith is back after a stellar varsity career already, while senior Austin Rusness and junior Michael Herzog each return as elite golfers as well.
Herzog missed the majority of the regular season in 2012, but returned from a knee injury 10 days before the section meet and was a crucial component in DL’s state championship run.
Rusness is also a consistent top two to three golfer, to make the Laker trio a formidable one in each meet.
That basically leaves the final three slots open for a talented contingent of golfers.
Senior Sam Goral has been working hard to secure one of those spots, along with five sophomores in Tanner Schnathorst (state team last year), Ben Mallow (All-Conference), Christian Hedstrom, Dahlen Olson and Austin Dodd.
“Our top three can shoot par or better, but I want the other three to be shooting right up there, and they can,” Gorden added.
After winning the last two state championships, the big meet the Lakers will focus on is the Section 8-2A meet, which is June 3 at Walker’s Longbow Golf Course.
“We focus everything into that June 3 meet, because if you can win that one, you can move ahead and win the other one,” Gorden said.
The schedule for the Lakers is the usual rugged one, with big-time meets at Jordan April 20, White Bear Lake April 22, at Hermantown April 26-27 and several others which attract some of the top golf teams in Class 2A and 3A from around the state.
With the returning elite experience, as well as the depth, this Laker team could potentially be better than the last year.
“I feel it could be as good as we’ve ever had, I’ll say that,” Gorden said.
And if that comes to fruition, that will not bode well for the rest of the teams in Class 2A.
