DETROIT LAKES BOYS HOCKEY: Lakers rebound to finish 2-1 in St. Cloud

The Detroit Lakes boys' hockey team capped the Granite City Classic in St. Cloud with an 8-1 victory Thursday, rebounding from a 5-2 loss to Northern Lakes Wednesday, thus finishing the three-day tourney 2-1.

The Lakes reeled off five goals in the second period against Morris/Benson en route to an 8-1 victory.

Forward Austin Rusness completed a hat trick, along with an assist, while Kyle Herrmann added two goals and two assists.

"That first line had a great week and scored in every game," said DL head coach Chris Denardo. "They are starting to show their true colors. Overall, everybody played well Thursday."

Other goals were scored by junior Taylor Magnuson, Braedon Householder and first-liner Alex Mason, who also had three assists.

Freshman goalie MacKenzie Steele kept on his path of improvement by stopping 14 of 15 shots on net, thus capping a solid showing in the three-game tournament.

"Mack (Steele) looked a little tired Wednesday with two quick goals on him, but he had six to seven big saves after that to keep us in the game," Denardo said. "He pulled it back together and had a good tournament."

The Lakers controlled the puck through and through by outshooting the Storm by a wide 32-15 margin.

DL was coming off a lackadaisical performance Wednesday in a 5-2 loss to Northern Lakes, a team the Lakers previously beat 2-1 earlier in the season.

Goalie Joey Bergquist, who had 61 saves in the first meeting against DL, had 27 this time around.

The Lightning scored the first two goals, before the Lakers stormed back to tie the game in the first period on tallies by Connor Collins and Taylor Magnuson, who notched his on a short-handed series.

But Northern Lakes scored three unanswered goals in the third period, including an empty netter. Five separate Lightning players scored, including Aspen Florey, Ben Moe, Kegan Couture, Connor Chambers and Jonah Lelwica.

"When you get down to a big goalie like that, it's tough to come back," Denardo said.

"We were able to tie it back up, but in the third period, the three times they were able to get it in our zone, they scored.

"We had some defensive breakdowns and they had some odd-man rushes."

The Lakers will enter their 2012 portion of the schedule at .500 with a 5-5 record. Their Section 8-1A games will loom large for playoff seeding, especially their next game against Park Rapids, which DL has lost to previously.

"We want to keep up our defensive performance and we need to have more offensive output, because we will not be able to live on three to four goals a game," Denardo said of the goals of the team for the remaining 18 games.

The Lakers will be back in action Thursday on the road in Wadena-Deer Creek (0-7), starting at 7:30 p.m.
