Detroit Lakes boys' track ready to defend conference championship
The Detroit Lakes boys' track and field team have the numbers out and are ready to defend its Mid-State Conference title from the 2008 season.
Despite not necessarily having the big guns who are going to be able to consistently garner first and second-place spots, the Lakers are deep.
"We have 50 to 60 kids out and it will literally be a team effort this year," said DL head boys' track coach Steve Zamzo. "We will get some first and second-place finishes, but we'll mostly have to three, four and five them to death."
There's plenty of experience back, starting with senior sprinter Dustin Rietsema, who will be competing in each of the 100, 200 and 400-meter dash events.
Senior Luke Champa is back in the long and triple jumps, after starting off strong last year before getting mono to derail his season in 2008.
Senior Dustin Nelson will anchor the mid-distance races, as well as the discus.
"We are expecting some big things out of Dustin this year," Zamzo said.
The throwing events will have some good experience, which includes senior Mike Kohler and junior Pat Williams.
In the hurdles, freshman Steven Labine and sophomore Jon Melgaard come back with a year of experience.
The long distance races should also be solid, with cross country runners Leif Johnson, Dylan Ramstad-Skoyles and Matt Weiss leading the way.
"We have quite a few cross country runners out, so that will be a huge benefit," the DL coach stated.
Joining Rietsema in the sprinting events will be freshmen Nick Griffith and Cody Jordan.
Other jumpers also include Griffith and freshman Ryan Kalberer.
The Lakers open in the Bemidji Indoor meet March 31.
