Detroit Lakes' first-half explosion downs Fergus Falls
A first-half scoring onslaught by Detroit Lakes' Josh Stalberger and the Lakers was more than enough to put the clamps on visiting Fergus Falls in a 66-34 victory Saturday.
Stalberger made a killing in the paint, scoring 16 of his 18 points in the first half, as the Lakers built a 47-24 halftime lead.
DL's defense applied plenty of pressure the entire game, limiting the Otters to 10 points in the second half alone.
"We been working on closing out defensively and how important it is to pressure the ball," said DL head coach Robb Flint. "Our 2-2-1 press was working and the guys were rotating well."
The Lakers (6-6) also moved the ball well on the offensive side, as point guard Connor Hedstrom finished with nine assists, with plenty of them going inside to Stalberger.
"The guys were pushing the ball up the floor well to build that 47-24 halftime lead," Flint said.
Junior guard Connor McLeod remained consistent with 12 points, while Hedstrom added 10 points to his nine assists.
Sophomore guard Brian Labat added nine points, as well.
The Otters (2-9) were led by Spencer Kidder with 13 points, including a trio of three pointers.
Next up for the Lakers will be a tough Bemidji team (6-4), who are led by a potent backcourt.
"They are averaging 67 points a game," Flint said. "Their guards are good. We cannot let them push the ball on us and contest their shots."
DL will travel to Park Rapids (0-11) Friday for a 7:30 p.m. start.
