The lone ticket for the State True Team meet in Section 8-1A went to the team with the higher ceiling and unfortunately for the Detroit Lakes girls' track and field squad, they reached their limit.

The Lakers grabbed basically every point they could have in the Section 8-1A True Team meet in Park Rapids Tuesday, but it wasn't enough as the talented East Grand Forks team outscored them for the title 509.5 to 489.

"There wasn't no one place which got away from us," said DL girls' track coach Mike Labine. "There may have been some lost two points here or two points there, but for the most part, we got the best effort from our girls.

"There just were personal best performances all over."

The Green Wave benefited from having last year's Class 1A Triple Crown state sprinting champion and former Lake Park-Audubon athlete Ashley Tingelstad, who garnered 65 points by herself with two first place and a second place finish for EGF.

The Lakers didn't manage an event win, but grabbed a host of second through fifth-place finishes.

A potential meet-turning event was in the pole vault, where DL's Dani Labine and Amy Crawford placed in second and third place, respectively, which netted 41 team points.

But with only 14 pole vaulters taking part from six schools, EGF was able to gain 25 points from their competitors who placed seventh and 12th despite much shorter heights.

"We thought going in we could have had a much larger swing in points in pole vault with Dani and Amy," Labine said. "But with only six schools having vaulters, East Grand was able to gain those 25 points, which kind of negated our advantage."

Eighth grader Rose Jackson had a solid meet in her first True Team event, taking fourth in each of the 100 and 200 dash races.

With many of DL's tracksters competing in their first True Team meet, it was a good learning process for them.

"Some of our girls didn't even know how big a meet this was and didn't know what they were running for," the DL coach said. "But there wasn't any disappointment from the coaches, because we got the best effort from everyone."

The Laker boys finished sixth overall with 433 points, while Fergus Falls nipped out Pequot Lakes for the championship 548-536.

Dustin Rietsema won the shot put for the Lakers with a distance of 43-10.5 mark, while Leif Johnson was fourth in the 800 run at 2:09.42 and the 4x800 team finished second with a time of 8:44.70.

The Lakers will now have to switch gears and prepare for the Mid-State Conference meet, in which they will host Tuesday beginning at 4 p.m.

The DL boys will also be defending their conference title from last year against the five other schools in the Mid-State. Staples-Motley is the defending girls' champions.
