Detroit Lakes girls' defense smothers Otters
An inspired Detroit Lakes girls' basketball team put the vice-grips on the visiting Fergus Falls Otters Saturday to snatch a 47-27 victory.
After losing five of their last seven games, the Lakers applied a suffocating defense on the Otters to limit them to just nine field goals and one three pointer.
On the flipside, DL had well-spread out scoring, with seven players scoring, led by Abby Hoganson's 11 points.
"The defensive effort was outstanding," said DL head coach Mike Hoganson. "We really took away Fergus Falls' transition game and pressured their shots."
DL built a 24-14 halftime advantage, behind senior guard Dani Labine's nine points, which all came from beyond the three-point arc.
Abby Hoganson supplied eight points in the first half, while Jenny Matter finished with eight points and Taylor Tschider nine.
The Lakers (7-5) will play at Park Rapids (1-8) Friday for a Mid-State Conference game.
