One of the biggest challenges the Detroit Lakes girls’ golf team will face this season is finding new ways of staying motivated and setting goals.

Each time the Lakers set a goal last year, they met it with shining results, which climaxed with a Class 2A state team championship.

Repeating as state championships will certainly be on the agenda, but the Lakers know they need to focus on the regular season and the eventual Section 8-2A meet on June 3.

“One meet at a time, that’s what I preach,” said DL head coach Cali Harrier. “But we have some other goals like improving on our placement in the Red Wing meet and scoring lower than our 306 from last year (which is a school record).”

The Lakers return their entire lineup, sans 2012 senior Courtney Hedstrom, which convincingly won the Class 2A state championship.

“Courtney was an important part of the team because she was playing varsity from the start,” Harrier said. “She was a great leader.”

But how can a team not be comfortable by returning the reigning Class 2A state individual champion in freshman Kate Smith and state placer in junior Trisa Hutchinson?

Juniors Matty Tschider and Natalie Roth were consistent golfers, both scoring under 80, while Sydney Busker came on strong by shooting under 80 towards the end of the season.

Emma Thompson will also be a solid contributor after playing varsity the last two years.

“One goal is to consistently have four golfers under 75,” Harrier said. “We have six golfers who can do that on any given meet.”

The Lakers also have a good load of depth coming up from junior varsity, in which several of the younger golfers will have a chance to play varsity at split squad meets.

Complacency will not be a detriment, either, on this year’s team, because they are showing all the hunger of repeating as they did last year.

With snow still residing on all the area golf courses, the Laker players have been taking their golf lessons from various golf pros in the area, while all of them have made a trip south to play.

“We’ve been doing a lot of team building skills and going over our goal setting and rules of the game,” Harrier said. “This is not a cocky team, they are focused on playing the best golf they can play.

“With the weather, it’s a waiting game now.”

The Lakers potentially could start the season April 11, in Becker. They also have meets scheduled in Woodbury April 12 and East Ridge April 13.
