Detroit Lakes girls' hockey falls to Thief River Falls
Improvements are being made in each game for the Detroit Lakes girls' hockey team and Thursday in Thief River Falls, it was their scoring percentage which shot up.
The Lakers converted four goals out of 19 shots on net, but unfortunately for them, fell short of Thief River Falls for the second time this season 5-4.
"Our scoring percentage was very good throughout the game," said DL head coach Dan Maloney. "It was definitely an improvement and good to see that in that area."
DL held a 2-0 lead in the first period, with early goals by forwards Callie Johnson and Katie Mollberg, but the Prowlers answered back to tie the game before the second period with tallies by Maddy Aandal and Megan Malwitz.
TRF controlled the second period after Kortni Ackerson of DL put the Lakers up 3-2 4:28 into the frame on a power play opportunity, with the assist by Jayne Harms.
The Prowlers tied and eventually took a lead they would not relinquish with a their second power play goal of the game, this one by Kaitlin Lund. Ashley Mykelbust put the Prowlers up 4-3 9:30 into the second, as each of Alie Dorn and Rachael Lindquist were credited with assists.
That lead was extended to 5-3 3:50 into the third period as Britney Schwab was assisted by Rachael Lindquist.
The Lakers made one more lunge at the Prowlers, with Johnson collecting her second goal, as Brin Seebold and Friesen each gained assists.
"The quality of shooting was what improved, they had a couple of nice rebound goals and a power play goal," Maloney said. "Katie Mollberg's goal was a pretty nice one, too."
The Lakers pulled off goalie Winona Goettel late in the game to go a skater up in the waning moments of the game.
"We put some good pressure on the net, but couldn't get one in," Maloney said. "I felt the first and third periods were our strongest periods. We only had four shots on net in the second period. It was a back and forth game and we improved from the first game (DL and TRF met)."
Goettel finished the game with 27 saves, while Prowler goalie Kaylee Koop had 14.
The Lakers (0-7-1) will travel to Park Rapids Tuesday for a 7 p.m. start.
