Detroit Lakes girls' hockey goes on scoring barrage to down Pequot Lakes
It was a grand starting debut for Detroit Lakes eighth grade goalie Veronica Roy, who recorded an 11-0 shutout over visiting Pequot Lakes Tuesday inside Kent Freeman Arena.
Roy made her first career varsity start, saving seven of the Patriots' shots on net, as a pair of Lakers notched hat tricks in forwards Brin Seebold and Katie Mollberg.
The win lifts the Lakers to 2-12-1, while dropping the upstart Patriots -- who are playing their first varsity season in over five years -- to 1-10-0.
The Patriots' head coach is Detroit Lakes graduate Pat Meacham, who helped start up the girls' hockey program at Pequot Lakes.
A seven-goal second period for DL blew the doors off the visitors' chances, as Seebold recorded her hat trick in the second period alone.
She finished with five points, which included two assists.
"After scoring a couple of goals in the first period, we wanted to come out in the second period and not only keep the quantity of shots up, but more quality as well," said DL head coach Dan Maloney of his team's scoring barrage. "I saw the passing improve. The girls have seen the results of what happens when they play hard."
Mollberg opened the game's scoring 10:43 into the first period, and then tallied a goal in each of the next two periods for her hat trick. She added an assist to end with four points in the game.
Forward Callie Johnson had three assists in the game, while Brianna Bremseth had two goals.
Others scoring for DL included Melissa Gravelle, Brita Johnson and Shannon Utecht.
The line of Seebold, Mollberg and Johnson collected a total of 12 points.
Seebold is DL's leading scorer with 14 points, including a team-high 10 goals and four assists.
Johnson has 11 points, with three goals and eight assists to her credit.
"Brin was going hard to the net and with three goals in one period, she was creating good scoring opportunities," Maloney said. "Again, I saw their passing improve and they were all doing the little things right."
Roy also gained some valuable playing experience, despite not seeing a whole lot of action in her first start.
"When she did see some shots, she stopped the puck," Malone said of Roy. "As an eighth grader, that was good experience for her."
Pequot Lakes' goalie Kat Jensen started the contest, saving 27, while allowing six goals. Brooke Serfling finished the game, saving 17 and allowing five goals.
DL outshot the Pats by a 55-7 advantage.
Improvement was also shown Saturday in an 8-1 loss to state-ranked Alexandria (8-6-0).
Previously in the season, the Lakers were outshot heavily by the Cardinals in an 11-1 defeat, but Saturday, DL kept the shots on goal close, with a 31-24 margin.
"Alexandria set themselves up with some pretty good scoring opportunities," Maloney said. "It was fairly a back-and-forth game, but we just needed to create better scoring opportunities."
Senior Winona Goettel had 23 saves, while Alexandria's Lindsey Lien had 23.
The Lakers will travel to Wadena-Deer Creek/Long Prairie-Grey Eagle Thursday for a 5 p.m. start in Wadena.
W-DC (0-7-1) and the Lakers tied their matchup in Kent Freeman Arena earlier this season.
