Detroit Lakes girls' hockey wins first game of season
The monkey is off the Detroit Lakes girls' hockey team's back after it picked up its first win of the season at the River Lakes Tournament on Monday.
It didn't come easy as the Lakers held on for a 3-2 win over Le Sueur/St. Peter.
"We were playing a team that was close to the .500 mark and we played well," said Detroit Lakes coach Dan Maloney.
After Le Sueur/St. Peter took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, Detroit Lakes struck back with three straight goals during a five-minute span in the second period.
Katie Mollberg struck first, assisted by Korti Ackerson. Brin Seebold's goal put Detroit Lakes in the lead and Ackerson scored the eventual game-winner at the 5:21 mark of the period.
"We got a lot of pucks to the net throughout the game," Maloney said.
Winona Goettel took the win in net for Detroit Lakes, saving 13 shots.
"We played hard for three periods and that's what it takes to win," Maloney said.
The final on Tuesday against host River Lakes didn't go as well, as the Lakers lost 4-0.
Despite the loss, Maloney said that girls held their own against a deeper River Lakes team.
The Lakers (1-10-1) kept River Lakes to one goal for two periods before River Lakes top lines' talent started to show.
"They capitalized on some opportunities," Maloney said.
