Detroit Lakes matmen third in Perham Tournament
The Detroit Lakes wrestling team had a strong showing in the Perham individual wrestling tournament Saturday, landing in third out of eight teams.
The Lakers collected three runner-up positions, along with a third-place and five fourth-place finishes.
Those wrestling to the championship round included Mike Bellefeuille at 112 pounds, Brandon Baker at 119 and Nate Duchene at 160.
Bellefeuille lost to Perham's Andrew Gorentz in the title bout by pin in 5:03, while Baker fell to New London-Spicer's Chase Austvold in a narrow 12-11 decision.
Duchene battled his way through the 160 bracket, pinning Gavin Biegler of Perham in the semifinals, before falling to Park Rapids' Jared Nash on a 16-3 major decision.
Josh Tweeton fell in the semifinals at 145 to Perham's Dwight Jenne by a 4-0 decision, before wrestling his way through the consolation bracket to a third-place finish.
Tweeton downed New York Mills' Seth Hofland in the consolation side 7-1, and finished off his bronze performance with an 8-3 decision over Roseau's Josh Kruger.
The Lakers will be in Moorhead Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. start, and travel to Bemidji for a tournament Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m.
