Detroit Lakes offense becoming balanced with passing attack improving

There are a few more wrinkles the opponents of the Detroit Lakes football team will have to prepare for after the Laker's 34-12 win over Duluth Central Friday.

With the introduction of DL's aerial attack, balance is being fortified on the Laker's offensive side of the ball.

"We are just trying to become more balanced," said DL head coach Flint Motschenbacher. "Duluth Central tried to load up on us to stop the run, so we just tried to spread it around."

Sophomore quarterback Joe Mollberg had his best game throwing the ball, hitting five different receivers for 236 yards and three touchdowns, after going 11-20.

He raised his QB rating to 78.8, while throwing for a total of 520 yards, six touchdowns, four interceptions.

"Joe has done a good job and the offensive line has been protecting him well, giving him ample time to throw the ball," Motschenbacher said. "Paul Voeltz has done an exceptional job on the offensive line."

Sophomore running back Alex Mason is also providing a tough mentality to the rushing game, keying the inside rushing attack with 248 yards on 50 carries.

"Alex is the banger for us and Nate Baker did a good job running to the outside," Motschenbacher added. "We may also get Logan Baker back this week to help spread the field out."

The one area the defense will need to cut down on are penalties.

DL was called for nine infractions Friday, which was coming off a 15 flag game in Grand Rapids two weeks ago.

"If we can avoid the penalties, we'll be pretty good offensively," the DL coach added.

The defense is also starting to settle in after a good game against Duluth Central.

They will be facing a Duluth Denfeld (2-2) team which is coming off an impressive 35-21 win over Grand Rapids -- which beat DL in overtime two weeks ago 35-34.

"They are big and they run the football well," Motschenbacher said. "They use a lot of people and can throw the ball. We'll need to stop their rushing game and react to their passing.

"We'll have our hands full for sure."

The Homecoming game for the Lakers will start at 7 p.m. at Mollberg Field.
