Detroit Lakes' picnic has a name: 'Parkfest'
At a Tuesday afternoon meeting, Detroit Lakes City Council members and other community leaders decided on a name for the community picnic on May 12: "Parkfest."
The name wasn't originally on the list of 17 community submissions, but a similar one, "DL Mayfest," was. Voting members liked the general idea of a "fest," but combined other ideas on the list, many of which included "Park," to come up with the final name.
Credit for the final decision will go to Nick Biermeier, who submitted the "Mayfest" name.
Another close second was "The People's Picnic."
Many submitted names featured "Summer," "Community," "Celebration," and "Picnic," but organizers didn't want to limit the name just to a picnic, and since the picnic is in May, "Summer" didn't quite fit.
Other suggestions, like "Picnic in the Park" and "Spring Fling" were discarded since they were names of, or similar to, other well-known community events.
After the success of last year's Capital for a Day community picnic, Mayor Matt Brenk decided it needed to be a repeat celebration, even though it won't be for the sesquicentennial celebration.
For the remainder of the meeting, details and times were finalized. "Yard games" for children will include a sand castle contest, face painting and chipping golf balls into a kiddie pool, among others.
A high school baseball game will also take place at Ball Washington Park at 4 p.m.
Organizer Amy Stearns said they expect at least 1,500 attendees, but said that number was probably conservative.
The Parkfest will be on Tuesday, May 12 from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. at City Park.
In addition to the games, the Mosaic Mania silent auction will be held again, booths sponsored by local businesses will abound, and music and plays will be put on by local students, ending with a 5 p.m. free picnic of hot dogs, chips and pop.
A brief concert by a capella group Impulse will cap off the evening.
In the event of inclement weather, all events will move inside to the Pavilion, and children's games will likely be cancelled.
