The peanut products in question are 10-pound cans of roasted peanuts. Two cans were delivered to Detroit Lakes on Jan. 15, 2007.

Duane Dunrud, Food Service Director for Detroit Lakes Public Schools, said that the district doesn't have any of the peanuts in question left.

"We only got two cases," Dunrud said. "Nobody got sick."

He said that he personally checked the each school in the district to see if they still had any of the cans left over. Dunrud said they were used up.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture alerted the Minnesota Department of Education that peanuts from the Peanut Corporation of America were used in the school lunch commodity food distribution program in Jan. 2007. The federal commodity program provides food to schools and other entities at no cost.

The Peanut Corporation of America is the subject of a criminal investigation by the FDA as a result of the salmonella outbreak that has caused several deaths nationwide, including one linked to the death of a Wadena woman.

The FDA accused the firm of failing to take steps to mitigate salmonella contamination in the facility.

Approximately 12 instances of contamination occurred in 2007 and 2008 where the firm, as part of its own internal testing program, identified some type of salmonella in its product and still released the product into the marketplace.

The FDA also announced the expansion of the Peanut Corporation of America recall.

The recall was expanded to include peanut products from Jan 1, 2007 to the present. The Blakely, Ga. plant that produced the recalled products in question is currently closed.

The increased scope now includes a small quantity of peanut butter, and both dry and oil-roasted peanuts, which were purchased through the USDA commodity program.

While this is the first alert the department has received regarding peanuts in the USDA commodity program, the MDE has been providing continuous updates to Minnesota schools regarding which peanut products have been recalled by the USDA.
