Detroit Lakes Public Schools terminates 13 teacher contracts
The Detroit Lakes School Board terminated the contracts of 13 probationary teachers Monday with the actions being effective at the end of the school year.
Some of the terminations were part of cost cutting measures by the district as it needs to close an estimated $972,000 budget deficit for the 2009-10 school year. The Board discussed other cost containment cuts that include taking $200,000 from the district's reserves and also taking into account $200,000 in federal stimulus dollars.
The Board also is looking at extending the current operating levy that runs out in 2010. The school district is eying a November vote to either continue the $315 per pupil levy or increase it.
