For the second time in as many years, the Detroit Lakes softball team is timing its peak perfectly.

And it's no surprise that it coincides with Laker pitcher Callea Butz picking her game up.

The latest high seed to fall by the wayside in DL's wake was No. 3 Roseau, as the No. 6 Lakers upset the Rams 6-2 in the first round of the Section 8-2A playoffs Tuesday.

The upset mirrors the start of DL's amazing run last year, where the Lakers played all the way to the section championship as a No. 5 seed.

"We proved last year that no matter what your record is, you can go far in the playoffs," said DL head coach Phil Kirchner.

The Lakers hope that bodes true once again. They will advance to the double-elimination portion of the tournament in Thief River Falls Thursday.

The playoffs have been where Butz has pitched strong, and Tuesday was no different.

The junior pitcher smoked 14 Roseau batters for strikeouts and limited them to four hits.

"It was the Callea Butz of old," Kirchner added.

Roseau pitcher Dawn Comstock also was strong, recording 10 strikeouts and holding DL to four hits, but eight Roseau errors and some timely hits put the Lakers over the top.

A five-run fourth inning tipped the scales to DL after leading 1-0.

Two consecutive walks, to Jenna Lamb and Jalen Even, led to a Roseau error on a Donna Wicker hit.

Third baseman Sarah Wilson was hit by a Comstock pitch on a full count to load the bases.

Catcher Brianna Seebold proceeded to lace a two-run single to left-center field to score Even and Wicker, which provided two of Seebold's three RBIs on the day.

Ashley Baer drew a walk to load the bases again, as Amalea Branden followed up with the inning's second two-run single to score both Wilson and Seebold, which put the Lakers up 6-0.

Roseau made a late push in the seventh inning, scoring two runs off of one hit, two walks and a DL error -- but it was much too little, too late.

"(Comstock) was a good pitcher, but we were able to take advantage of some errors and walks," Kirchner said. "It was an exciting game and we put everything together at the right time."

The Lakers also had one error to Roseau's eight.

DL ended the regular season with three consecutive losses to Moorhead by the score of 13-6, and two to Wadena-Deer Creek by the scores of 12-2 and 7-1.
