Detroit Lakes wrestlers sweep through East Grand Forks quadrangular
DETROIT LAKES - A little team sit down held by the Detroit Lakes wrestling coaches helped spark a 3-0 sweep by the Lakers in the East Grand Forks quadrangular Tuesday, as the DL grapplers had one of their best performances of the season.
The Lakers raised their dual record to 6-3 and added a big section win over Roseau Tuesday by the score of 46-24.
They also had their way with EGF 58-18 and Walker/Hackensack-Akeley/Nevis 47-18.
"After that Moorhead triangular performance we had (Jan. 15), we sat down the guys and talked about how flat we wrestled," said DL head coach Rob Ullyott. "We wanted to make sure that didn't happen again."
It didn't, at least not Tuesday in East Grand Forks.
Gabe Foltz ignited the motivation for the Lakers in the 103-pound match, despite losing 9-2.
"Roseau was a toss-up dual and we were able to come out on top in the matches we were suppose to win and even pulled out a couple even matches," Ullyott added. "Gabe Foltz went up against (Jesse Eastman), a kid who has dominated him this season.
"But Gabe just gave up a decision and wrestled hard. When the rest of the team saw an undersized 103-pounder like Gabe wrestle like that, it rippled through the team."
That led to Mike Bellefeuille pinning Braden Stroot at 112 and Brandon Baker recording a fall at 119 for a 12-3 DL lead.
The Lakers' key run came in the middle to heavier weights, as DL won five of the last seven matches.
Josh Tweeton kicked it off with a pin at 145 over John Krueger, with Nate Duchene adding a fall at 152 over Nate Constante.
The 171-215 weights sealed the deal for the Lakers, as Alex Feldt posted 16-3 major decision, while each of Brandon Johnson and Justin Holm went for back-to-back pins at 189 and 215.
"We have a lot of balance through the lineup," Ullyott said. "We don't have any superstars, but a lot of average wrestlers. But they are continually learning and becoming above average wrestlers.
"We don't have any holes where we will get pinned every time and that's important."
Johnson had a solid week, which began with the senior 189-pounder winning the Bemidji individual tournament Saturday, Jan. 17.
His decision over Bemidji's Evan Olson in the championship match was just another notch in his climb upward.
"Brandon is figuring out his style of wrestling," Ullyott said. "He is also developing more confidence and now he just needs to continue getting better with his offense."
Travis Sims was the tournament's 140-pound runner-up, as he fell to Perham's Dwight Jenne by a pin in the title bout.
Sims' journey started with a pin in the first round against the tournament's No. 2 seeded-wrestler, who at the time was undefeated.
"Travis had a great day, he may give up some points, but he is a scrapper and he brings lots of excitement," the DL coach said.
The Lakers finished with a total of seven placers, to finish seventh out of nine teams.
DL will be in Barnesville Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. start.
Wrestler of week
The DL wrestler of the week for Jan. 4-10, was Nate Duchene.
Duchene is a junior captain who wrestles in the 152-pound weight class.
The junior grappler had a great week where he finished in second place at the Perham tournament.
"Nate is also one of the hardest workers in the practice room where he leads by example," said DL head coach Rob Ullyott. "Nate is also an important part of student leadership at DLHS as he is on officer for student council.
For the week of Jan. 11-17, the wrestler of the week was Travis Sims.
Sims is a junior who wrestles in the 135-140 pound weight classes.
Recently, Sims went 2-0 on the JV and finished 3-1 at the Bemidji varsity tournament.
In the Bemidji tournament, Travis placed second after upsetting the second-seeded wrester in his weight class.
"Travis is also a student that excels in the classroom where he is an honor roll student," Ullyott added.
