Along the way recently, DL has wrestled well against some top competition.

The Lakers lost to No. 7 Thief River Falls 44-21, while rebounding with a 39-28 win over host Fosston/Bagley Thursday evening.

The triangular came at the heels of a 41-19 defeat to No. 2 Class 2A ranked Perham Tuesday, in which DL head coach Rob Ullyott was pleased with the effort, despite the loss.

"You still can wrestle well in losses," Ullyott said. "I thought we wrestled aggressively and hard against Perham, they just have a lot of talent on that team. I was happy with the effort from 103 to heavyweight."

Brandon Baker pulled the upset for the Lakers by handling No. 6 ranked Jacob Werner with a 20-7 major decision at 119 pounds.

The victory for Baker gives him the inside track for the No. 1 seed at 119 for the section individual tournament.

"That was a good section win for Brandon," Ullyott added.

Mike Bellefeuille pulled off a 7-3 win over Brady Sazama at 112, while other DL winners included Josh Tweeton (145), Alex Feldt (160) and Brandon Johnson (189).

DL wrestled just as well against No. 7 Thief River Falls to open Thursday's triangular, but the Prowlers "had too many guns" in the 44-21 win.

Baker stayed on a roll with a 6-0 decision on Holden Nelson at 119, but the Prowlers were too strong from the middle to heavier weights, as they marked off five straight wins from 145-189.

DL had a better performance versus Fosston/Bagley to register the 39-28 win.

It was kicked off by a Gabe Foltz major decision over Lucas Maul, as DL built a 30-0 lead with a technical fall by Bellefeuille and a Baker pin on Jake Miller.

F/B had two open weights at 125 and 130, and then proceeded to win the next two bouts at 140 and 145.

Josh Tweeton and Alex Feldt put together back-to-back wins by decision and pin, respectively, to put DL firmly in control 39-12.

The home team won the rest -- sans a double forfeit at 215 -- as No. 8 ranked Andrew Juve posted a major decision on Johnson at 189.

Johnson had his work cut out for him Thursday, after seeing the No. 1 ranked 189-pounder in the previous match, where he lost to TRF's Travis Peralta by a 12-2 major decision.

"We held a 2-1 edge in the toss-up matches and the guys wrestled aggressively," Ullyott said.

The Lakers (9-5) will wrestle in the Wadena-Deer Creek triangular Tuesday starting at 5 p.m. and will host Class 1A's No. 7 ranked Frazee Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. start.
