Detroit Mountain can be a boom to Becker County
Bring back Detroit Mountain as a year-round recreational park. This is perhaps a once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase this piece of property.
Think of the foresight people had when they established the Detroit Lakes Country Club, Dunton Locks, the city parks, our mile long beach, baseball parks, soccer fields, tennis courts, the Detroit Lakes Community & Cultural Center, county fair grounds, field house for hockey and community events and the city and county airport. These facilities are used by thousands of people year-round. These things are what make Becker County and Detroit Lakes such a great place to live, work and play.
Then think of the many year-round things Detroit Mountain would bring. Have you ever been to the top of the mountain? What a beautiful sight. You can see for miles in all directions. How about an observation deck at the top; perhaps an observatory where students from area schools can study astronomy. Many things will be done with the property. Primitive camping, nature trails, mountain bike trails, walking trails, archery and Frisbee area are all things that do not require a great deal of investment.
Then there are the many winter activities that could be established. They require an investment; however, this could be done over a period of time.
The wonderful part of the whole project is that the county and city would not only be purchasing a 200 acre piece of property, they also would be getting a great deal of established infrastructure. There is a road, parking lot, wells, lodge, cross country trails, ski runs, underground piping for making snow and a number of other improvements to the property.
I also feel this would be one of the better economic investments the county and city could make. It would not only attract a large number of people to the area, it would also increase employment. -- Ron Paskey, Detroit Lakes
