Voters in the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton School District on Tuesday overwhelmingly supported an increase in spending per student.

Residents in the district were asked to decide two questions on a referendum.

In the first question, voters were asked to approve continuing the current operating levy for the district.

In complete but unofficial results, voters approved the first question 72 percent, or 471 yes votes, to 27 percent, or 177 no votes, according to Superintendent Bryan Thygeson.

The second question, which asked voters to increase the operating levy to $600 per pupil, or by $166.63, passed with 63 percent of the vote, or 410 ‘yes’ votes. Thirty-seven percent, or 239 voters, were not in favor of the measure.

“What I’m very happy about is they were pretty consistent across the whole district,” Thygeson said.

He said renewing the current operating levy allows the district to continue to provide its current level of service, including a low student-to-teacher ratio of 20-to-1.

The increase in funding will be used to convert computer labs to classrooms for the growing district. It also will allow the district to hire a full-time counselor and an additional social worker so a counselor will be available in both the middle and high schools.
