Divers recover body of trucker who went through ice on Lake of the Woods
Divers have recovered the body of a truck driver who went through the ice on Lake of the Woods near Minnesota's Northwest Angle.
The Ontario Provincial Police identified the trucker as 68-year-old Allen Elleson of Angle Inlet, Minn.
Authorities say Elleson was hauling cement in a dump truck Friday morning across the frozen lake from the Northwest Angle to Ontario's Monument Bay Lodge.
He missed a turn on the Canadian side of the lake, drove up on a pressure crack in the ice and went through about two miles from Monument Bay Lodge, according to a news release from the OPP.
The OPP received a call at around 9 a.m. Friday after Elleson didn't show.
Using an underwater camera, OPP and Lake of the Woods County officials found the truck resting upside down in about 20 to 30 feet of water. The ice there was estimated at 20 inches thick.
On Sunday evening, divers retrieved Elleson's body from inside the truck cab.
