Despite out-hitting and out-pitching East Grand Forks Thursday, the visiting Detroit Lakes baseball team made too many errors on the bases in a 5-4 loss in nine innings.

The Lakers (5-7) doubled up the Green Wave in hits by a 13-6 edge, but lost four base runners, two of whom were thrown out at the plate.

“We lost our opportunities,” said DL head coach Steve Fuhs. “We made errors on the bases, which really hurt us. But the kids kept battling through to the end.”

Junior pitcher Connor Johnson threw another strong game, going seven innings, allowing just five hits and striking out four.

The Lakers started off swinging the bat well by taking a 3-0 lead after two innings, with a sacrifice fly by Sam Voz and a run-producing double by Ben Thompson.

But the Green Wave (7-2) struck for run in each of the third through fifth frames to take a 4-3 advantage. DL made two crucial errors in the third and fourth innings to help lead to three runs.

A leadoff double by Ryan Cihak to start the seventh inning started the game-tying rally, as Jackson Lyngaas advanced him on a sacrifice fly and Johnson batting him in to knot the score at 4-4.

It took two extra innings, before Trevor Selk hit Nate Phillips in with a single in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.

“We ended up beating ourselves somewhat,” Fuhs said. “There isn’t much room for error against a team like East Grand Forks and we had too many mistakes.

“But I was happy to see the guys continue fighting. The main thing is we did get better.”

Cihak and Thompson led the way with three hits apiece, while Lyngaas and Johnson had two each.

Thompson was tagged with the loss after pitching the final 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit.

The Lakes will be busy with a road game in Bemidji Monday and a home contest against Moorhead Tuesday at 5 p.m.
