The Detroit Lakes boys' hockey team scored its highlight win of the season, thus far, with an impressive 3-2 victory over visiting International Falls Friday.

But the Lakers were not done beating their northern counterparts, as they downed visiting Kittson Central 8-5 Saturday to improve to 7-9 on the season.

In Friday's upset of the Broncos (7-6-4), Kyle Herrmann's goal 5:31 into the final period proved to be the victorious score, as DL sophomore goalie MacKenzie Steele and the Laker defense held strong the rest of the way.

Herrmann was assisted by fellow senior forward Taylor Magnuson and Jonathan Hallisey.

International Falls broke out to a 1-0 margin on Jackson Vollom's goal after a scoreless first period.

But DL's leading scorer, senior forward Austin Rusness notched a power play goal on assists by Herrmann and Magnuson.

The DL trio repeated the power play effort just 50 seconds later to give the Lakers a 2-1 advantage heading into the third period.

Jack Mellstrom's goal 1:04 into the third set up Herrmann's eventual game-winning score.

Steele had a solid game in net with 24 saves, while surviving a 20-shot second period by giving up just one goal.

The Lakers owned the third period, outshooting the Broncos by a wide 21-1 margin, while taking a 35-26 overall tally.

The momentum continued into Saturday, as the Lakers pummeled the Bearcats (10-6) for five goals in the first period.

It was more than enough for the 8-5 victory, with Steele picking up 24 saves, while the Lakers outshot Kittson Central 43-32.

Magnuson sparked the strong first period by scoring just 30 seconds into the game, while Michael Herrmann put DL up 2-0 2:29 later.

Magnuson followed up with his second goal on a shorthanded effort, which was followed by two Bearcat goals and Ryan Deconcini's goal for the 5-2 advantage.

In the second period, Magnuson recorded his first hat trick of his career with his third tally, while each of Deconcini and Herrmann added two more scores to secure the 8-5 win.

Steele had 27 saves in the victory.

Lakers who gained assists included Deconcini and Connor Collins with two, while Rusness led all DL players with three.

Single assists were credited to Kyle Herrmann, Hallisey, Isaac Fondrick, Casey Paskey and Steele.

The Lakers will be in action Friday at Prairie Centre (Long Prairie/Sauk Centre), starting at 7:30 p.m.
