DL duo 4th in tennis sections

The Detroit Lakes tennis duo of Isaac Fondrick and Jake Hartman played to the Section 8-1A semifinals, territory in which no Laker has advanced to in quite some time.

Unfortunately, the path to a Section finals bid ended one match short Thursday in Thief River Falls, after TRF's Engelstad and Rodahl downed the DL pair in straight sets by scores of 6-1.

"Jake and Isaac played well, getting to the semifinals was a good accomplishment," said DL head coach Wade Johnson.

Fondrick and Hartman played in the third place match with the chance for a true second match-up Friday, but the 2009 section doubles champions Nick Biermaier and Carter Denison won in three sets.

The DL twosome took the first set 7-6, but fell in the second and third by the scores of 6-3, 6-2.

Hartman and Fondrick won their first match of the day with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over their Staples-Motley counterparts.

Denison and Biermaier also ended CJ Hanson's and Jesse Meyer's section tournament with a 6-4, 7-5 win in the quarterfinals.

Engelstad and Rodahl moved on to win the Section championship and will compete in the Class 1A state meet next week.

"Everyone competed hard for us," Johnson said. "The season went well and it was a great year. We had a lot of younger guys step up this year."
