The Detroit Lakes football program will come full circle Friday during the Lakers' Homecoming game against Thief River Falls.

The rising and hard-charging Laker squad -- the owner of a four-game winning streak -- will have the 1992 DL football team in the stands as Laker Hall of Honor inductees.

It was that 1992 team which put the Laker football program on the map with the school's first-ever team state championship, which eventually led to a football powerhouse with three more state titles to its name.

"I talk about that team all the time to the players now," said DL head coach Flint Motschenbacher, who was the defensive coordinator of the 1992 squad. "They were just a bunch of hard-working guys who were dedicated to the game of football. We have relied on the tradition that group (of 1992) have developed."

With the Lakers pulling out of an 0-2 funk to start the season to gain their four straight wins, DL is now tied for second in the Section 8-4A point standings with Alexandria.

Sartell is on top of the section, with Sauk Rapids trailing in fourth.

The Lakers' opponent Friday is a Class 3A foe, and a very familiar one at that, in No. 6 state ranked Thief River Falls, who will carry a 5-1 record into Friday's tilt.

The Prowlers have outscored their opponents by a 156-83 margin, with their only loss being a 28-6 stinker against Warroad.

"They are a big football team, with a big offensive line and a big fullback who comes at you," Motschenbacher said. "We'll have our hands full."

The two teams have played each other for the most part of the last 15-20 years, after being in the same North Country Conference for the last several.

The Lakers and Prowlers will again be conference rivals starting next year, when DL enters the Heart O'Lakes Conference.

"We've had a good run the last four weeks, but we know we have two more important games ahead of us," Motschenbacher said.

DL has been able to attack opponents on the ground and through the air, especially with dual-threat junior quarterback Joe Mollberg, who leads the team in rushing with 556 yards for an average per rush of 4.96 yards.

Mollberg also has been opening up the aerial attack with his 599 yards passing.

Senior wide receiver Josh Stalberger has 15 receptions on the year, with 220 yards to lead the team.

The Laker defense has been stout in the four-game winning streak, including six interceptions over the last two games -- with Rick Hutchinson picking off three and Erik Larson two.

The Lakers have outscored their opponents by a 155 to 111 margin, while outgaining them by a combined 1,820 yards to 1,588.

The Hall of Honor Class of 2010 will be introduced during halftime of Friday's game, and the banquet will be held Saturday, starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Historic Holmes Theatre.
