DL Girls Basketball - Hutchinson stuns Pelican Rapids with last-second three-pointer
Detroit Lakes junior forward Trisa Hutchinson knows how to make her points count.
Despite scoring just three points in the Lakers' road game in Pelican Rapids Saturday, Hutchinson's three-pointer with just five seconds left in regulation lifted DL to a stunning 42-41 victory over the Vikings.
DL handed Pelican Rapids just its second loss of the season at 11-2, while the Lakers improve to 4-9.
"There were three big keys to beating Pelican," said DL head coach Mike Hoganson. "One, we handled their full-court pressure. Two, we stopped penetration and three, we needed to slow the tempo Pelican Rapids likes to play games in."
The Laker backcourt of sophomore point guard Kyley Foster and senior Karli Kerzman did an effective job handling the ball and limiting turnovers.
The duo was able to find DL's post players, as sophomore center Shay Nielsen had 10 points and junior Brooke Olson eight.
Foster also did a solid job guarding the Vikings' leading scorer, senior guard Madison Korf, who finished with nine points.
"Kyley really cut off her driving lanes," Hoganson said.
DL was also able to slow the game down to their pace, thus limiting the potent Viking offensive attack to scoring opportunities.
"They like to play games into the 60's, while we wanted to keep it in the 40's," Hoganson said. "We did this."
The Vikings were also 8-16 from the free throw line, which hindered their progress.
Foster added eight points, while Kerzman had a pair of three's for a total of six points.
The Lakers will host Crosby-Ironton (5-6) in Mid-State Conference action Thursday, starting at 7:30 p.m.
Detroit Lakes at Pelican Rapids, Saturday, Jan. 12.
