DL Girls Basketball: Lakers drop close one in O.T.

A near upset of the Class 2A No. 6 ranked Staples-Motley has given the Detroit Lakes girls' basketball team a bit more of a push heading into the Section 8-3A playoffs.

Despite losing their last three games, the Lakers (10-14) have played well enough in two of them for potential upsets of a pair of state-ranked teams in Class 3A No. 1 Fergus Falls and Staples-Motley Thursday, losing in overtime 59-54.

DL's last three opponents have a combined record of 60-13 and the Lakers' 37-29 loss to Alexandria (16-8) Tuesday was the only hiccup of the three defeats.

"Anytime you play in close games, you need something to help you win, if that means a defensive stop, hitting your free throws or making the big shot," said DL head coach Mike Hoganson. "Staples-Motley made the plays on this night, but it was a game which helped both teams for the tournament.

"Both teams got better."

For the second time this season, it was junior post Trisa Hutchinson who made the buzzer-beating bucket to extend DL's life.

The first was a game-winning three-pointer against Pelican Rapids earlier this season.

Thursday night it came off a nice pass by senior guard Karli Kerzman, as Hutchinson knocked in the easy basket to tie the game 51-51 with two seconds left on the clock.

In overtime, though, the Cardinals put on a display of why they are ranked in the top 10 in the state, as they outscored DL by an 8-3 margin after winning the tip, sinking a two-point field goal, followed by a three-pointer to go up by five.

"We made Staples-Motley work for every point," Hoganson said. "Kerzman hit a couple of three's early in the game, which gave the team some confidence."

DL trailed 30-24 at halftime.

The Cardinals ramped up their intensity after falling down by five, with their spread-out offensive attack pulling them back into the game.

The Cardinals (19-5) had three players in double digits, with Kelly Pearson leading the way with 13 points, including four three's in the first half alone.

Jasmine McGillvray added 12 points and Mikayla Wing 11.

Laker sophomore post Shay Nielsen was strong inside with 15 points, while Kerzman had 11 and sophomore point guard Kyley Foster added 10. (Boxscore is of Tuesday's game, which hasn't been reported on, yet).
