DL Girls Basketball - Lakers play Bemidji down to the wire
The focused goal of stopping Bemidji senior forward Jess Yost was met by the Detroit Lakes girls' basketball team, but the end result still wasn't to their liking.
The Lumberjacks (4-8) were able to pick up more spread out scoring, after Yost was held to six points -- which is 12 points off her season average -- by pulling out a 46-40 win over the Lakers Friday in Bemidji.
The DL defense was able to keep the game close throughout, with the game tied 38-38 with five minutes left in the game.
But the Lakers went cold from the field, shooting 1-13, as Bemidji outscored them 8-2 down the stretch.
"We focused on Yost with our team defense and did a super job," said DL head coach Mike Hoganson. "Brooke Olson had a breakout game with 10 points and Kyle Foster really played a solid floor game, leading the way with five assists and only one turnover."
Senior guard Karli Kerzman also had 10 points, with a trio of three-pointers, while sophomore forward Shay Nielsen contributed nine points.
Bemidji's Dani Grohovd led her team with 11 points, while Kelsey Olson added eight.
The loss drops the Lakers to 3-9 on the season and they will face Pelican Rapids (9-1) Saturday on the road, starting at 7:30 p.m.
Detroit Lakes at Bemidji, Friday, Jan. 4.
