Patience was rewarded for the Detroit Lakes girls' basketball team, which used an effective ball-control, high-percentage shooting offense, along with a stingy defense, to down the visiting Moorhead Spuds 54-42 Tuesday.

The ability of passing the ball inside to the Laker post players worked out to almost perfection, as sophomore post Shay Nielsen dumped in 15 points, while DL also keyed the victory by going 24-31 from the free throw line.

"Our goal lately has been getting offensive rebounds and boxing out," Nielsen said. "The guards have been knocking down their perimeter shots and their passing has been very good."

One of those guards did just that, as senior Karli Kerzman matched Nielsen's 15 points, and the Lakers once again rose to meet their goal by holding their opponents near the 40-point mark.

Ball possession and good perimeter defense was what the Lakers used and used well.

After trailing early to the Spuds (5-11), DL started forcing the ball inside to Nielsen and fellow post teammate Brooke Olson.

That resulted in some higher percentage shots and the Lakers tied the game 15-15, then went on a mini run of 9-5 to lead 26-20 at halftime.

Sophomore point guard Kyley Foster drained a three-pointer to open the second half for the 29-20 advantage and the tempo was set as DL held at least a six-point advantage the rest of the way through.

With the Lakers controlling a much slower paced tempo, they were able to convert their baskets through the second half and also ma it to the free throw line, where they outscored the Spuds by 20 points.

"Karli and Kyley did a fantastic job of handling the tempo from their guard positions," said DL head coach Mike Hoganson. "They passed the ball inside to Shay, who was able to finish them off.

"Also when you go inside successfully, you get to the free throw line."

Kerzman, who leads the team in three pointers, used a trey to cut off a potential Spud rally at the 4:39 mark to put DL back up nine at 44-35.

"That was a huge shot," Hoganson said.

Defensively, the Lakers contained Moorhead's potent guard duo of Hailey Wixo and Kelli Tonn, who finished with eight and 16 points, respectively.

"Both of their guards are very good from the perimeter, so we keyed on them and focused on rebounding," Hoganson said. "The girls did a very good job with our match-up zone."

Foster finished with 12 points, as well, as the Lakers improved to 6-9 and are starting to put together a bit of a run in the backstretch of the season.

"After Christmas, we got to work and conditioned hard," Nielsen said. "This is a good win tonight against a rival."

The Lakers will host Pequot Lakes (11-6) for a Mid-State Conference showdown Thursday, starting at 7:30 p.m.
