DL girls' golf third in Brainerd Invitational
The first bump in the road was felt for the Detroit Lakes girls' golf team, albeit a small one.
The Lakers finished with their lowest score in any meet this season, with a third-place position in the Brainerd Invitational Thursday after carding a season-high 360.
Senior Danelle Olson's three-straight medalist winning streak was also snapped after she took second overall, shooting a six-over par 78 behind Staples-Motley's Cydney Hasselberg, who was first with a three-over 75.
"It really came down to one or two holes for the girls," said DL head coach Jennifer Hendrickson. "We need to start doing better on recovering from bad shots and working on their game from 150 yards on in.
"We can't have over double-bogeys on holes."
The Lakers' second-best score came from junior Robin Hutchinson, who fired a 45 on each nine for a final 90. The other two scores counted were Katie Osowski's 95 and Caitlin Berg's 97.
Katie Engberg finished with an even 100.
For Olson, she is entering each meet expecting to win. Her season so far has instilled good confidence and an even better game.
"Danelle improved mentally this season and that's been big for her," Hendrickson said. "After she shot a 78 (Thursday), she didn't feel good about it and felt she could have done better. That shows me she's on the right path."
The Lakers will be in the Mid-State Conference meet in Crosby-Ironton Monday and will host their own invite Tuesday at the Detroit Country Club, starting at 1 p.m.
