DL Girls Hockey: Lakers burn Blue Devils in overtime

The season ended in the Section 6-1A semifinals for the Detroit Lakes girls' hockey team, as they fell to the top-seeded Alexandria Cardinals 7-2 Tuesday.

The Lakers advanced to the semifinals with a 3-2 overtime victory over Wadena-Deer Creek/Long Prairie-Grey Eagle Saturday, as Randa Larsen's power play goal 49 seconds into the extra period sealed DL's win.

"It was a scrappy game against Wadena, but credit the Blue Devils, they came ready to play," said DL head coach Gretchen Norby. "We were able to move the puck well, sustaining pressure down in the offensive end and putting lots of shots on their goalie, but couldn't find the back of the net."

The Lakers (5-22) led through one period after Chandra Johnson made a hard shot on net, with Larsen making the tip for the tally 1:23 into the contest, but W-DC added a power play goal by Halley Maas.

Zara Einerwold put the visitors on top 2-1 with a short-handed goal in the third period, but DL's Emily Seebold tied the game at 2-2 three minutes later.

But DL earned a power play in the extra period, making an early shot for the win realistic.

"I knew if we could jump on them right away, we had a good chance," Norby said. "Their goalie had been giving up big rebound chances all night and Randa was able to get a stick on one and get in there for the game winner."

Veronica Badurek recorded the playoff win with 25 saves, while Angela Hanson had 33 saves for W-DC.

"Badurek played solid for us on Saturday," Norby said. "For a goaltender, it is important to keep yourself in the game when you're are not seeing consistent shots and she did a good job. Veronica came up big for us on a couple nice saves."

There were no stats available from the loss to Alexandria at press time.

The Cardinals (18-6-2) will play No. 2 seeded Fergus Falls (10-13-2) Friday for the Section 8-1A championship in Detroit Lakes' Kent Freeman Arena.
