DL girls string together 8 wins in a row
The surging Detroit Lakes girls basketball team (12-4), winners of eight straight and 9-1 in their last 10 games, kept on winning as the Lakers downed Perham 63-39 Saturday night in non-conference play.
Analea Erickson was red hot for Perham early, sinking three baskets from behind the arc and sparking Perham to an 11-10 lead.
Detroit Lakes’ junior guard Kyley Foster spurred the Lakers to the break and after halftime, which ended at 34-16 on a 23-6 DL scoring run to the horn.
While Foster was having her way from outside and driving the lane, the frontcourt was a battleground for both clubs.
“We were straight up outsized but held our own in the interior, only giving up 10 post points, but DL is such a good shooting team that they made us pay outside,” Perham Head Coach TJ Super said.
Foster was strong on the break all game and opened up the second half outscoring Perham herself, 14-7, on her way to a game-high 18 points.
“We didn’t start the game as well as we wanted to…” Foster said. “...but once we figured out our defense and coach gave a good pep talk at half, we came out and started attacking more and made good passes — knocking down shots.
The Laker defense shut down Perham’s attack, allowing the Laker offense to score in spurts.
“Their size really affected our shooting, even though we got great shots, we had to speed them up a little because of their size,” said Super.
Detroit Lakes kept an eye on Erickson, not allowing the Perham senior to score the remainder of the game after her early attack from the arc. Erickson finished with a team-high nine points.
Both teams were playing on no rest, as DL defeated No. 3 3A Thief River Falls at home Friday, while Perham suffered a road loss at Breckenridge. The Yellowjackets (7-11) are 3-7 in their last 10 games. Perham will get Sunday off before returning to the court for their third game in four days, at home versus Class A Menahga (5-10).
