The wood bats were taken out as the Detroit Lakes Post 15 baseball team went 2-1 in the Perham Tournament Saturday and Sunday.

Post 15 downed Win-E-Mac 5-1 and Stephen-Argyle 8-2, while falling to Casselton, N.D., 8-1.

DL opened the tourney with an impressive outing by Connor Johnson on the mound, who struck out 13 Win-E-Mac batters, while walking one and allowing four scattered hits.

“Connor’s curve was good and he had some good rotation on it, which is key,” said DL head Legion coach Mitch McLeod. “What I was more impressed with was his control and giving up just one walk. He was hitting his spots.”

The DL bats supported Johnson’s effort by collecting seven hits, including RBI hits by Austin Eiter, Sam Velde and Jackson Lyngaas.

“Everyone was hitting across the board and the defense played well with only one error,” Mitch McLeod said.

Post 15 had only five hits against Casselton, who was throwing a Division I recruit of the University of North Dakota.

DL actually had success against the lefty, but couldn’t come up with the big hit by stranding 11, with four in scoring position.

“Their pitcher only had two strikeouts on us, so we were hitting him,” Mitch McLeod said. “We just didn’t have any big hits to score our runners. We had ample opportunity to score more runs.”

Reed Johnson had a solid outing, pitching five innings. But three costly errors resulted in four unearned runs, as DL was down 2-1 heading into the fifth inning.

Sam Voz came in for relief in the sixth and finished the game out.

Taylor Magnuson was the only DL batter to have more than one hit by going 2-4.

“Casselton also put some pressure on us by running the bases well, too,” McLeod included.

Post 15 capped the tournament with an 8-2 win over Stephen-Argyle Sunday, as they racked up 17 hits, including three hits each by their leadoff and No. 3 and 4 hitters in Grossman, McLeod and Magnuson.

Magnuson recorded three RBIs, including a two-run double in the seventh inning, while Grossman, McLeod, Eiter and Matter each had run-producing hits.

Ryan Cihak controlled the Stephen-Argyle lineup well, allowing six hits, while walking one and striking out six.

Post 15 improves to 4-6 on the season, despite not having a full lineup in its first 10 games.

“I’m a little frustrated we haven’t had a complete team, yet, because these kids are being drawn in so many directions,” Mitch McLeod said.

“They are not being given the option of just having fun during the summer and playing baseball.”

Post 15 will host Alexandria Thursday and take part in the Fargo Tournament Friday through Sunday.
