The 2010 Legion baseball season started fast and furious for the Detroit Lakes Post 15 team, after the squad played five games in three days to win the Sam DuBois Division of the Red River Classic Tournament, held Friday through Sunday.

All the games were played in West Fargo, where Post 15 finished with a record of 3-2.

The DL squad opened the tournament with a 7-4 win over West Fargo Friday -- after games were postponed Thursday due to inclement weather -- then dropped a 5-2 loss to Midway/Minto.

The Lakers were hit with their second loss Saturday morning by the score of 10-6, but took both games Sunday, over Apple Valley 7-4 and Winnipeg South, Canada, 14-3.

DL lefty Ben Lindquist tossed a four-hit complete game against West Fargo Friday, while T.J. Manning and Brock Johnson both went yard.

Manning hit a decisive three-run shot in the top of the seventh inning to put DL up 7-1, while Johnson's was a solo homerun in the fourth.

"Ben (Lindquist) pitched well and he had some good defense behind him," said DL Post 15 head coach Mitch McLeod. "The guys had some big defensive plays."

Manning led the hitting brigade with two hits.

Midway/Minto powered their way to a 5-2 win over DL, behind two homers off of Johnson.

DL had a partial squad due to other commitments, while Nate Krohne had a good day with a double.

Kirk McLeod went 2-3, as did leadoff hitter Max Knoll.

Johnson had five strikeouts on the mound, but gave up the two homers in the first inning.

"We had three errors, too, which hurt us," Mitch McLeod said.

Four errors also hindered DL in a 10-6 loss to Jamestown.

Nine of Jamestown's runs were unearned, as Manning pitched five innings in relief of Alex Guetter.

"I was proud of how T.J. was able to gut it out," Mitch McLeod said.

The Lakers gave up five unearned runs in the top of the seventh, after trailing only 5-4 heading into the frame.

Knoll went 2-4 with two RBIs, while Johnson matched those numbers as well.

Sunday was much more productive, as DL had all its players back.

They erupted for five runs in the bottom of the first inning against Apple Valley, as Jordan Manning made his Legion debut a successful one by scattering four hits.

DL had one error in the game, as Aaron Gnoinsky and Connor McLeod each had two hits.

"Jordan Manning pitched great," Mitch McLeod said. "It was a good win over a good Apple Valley team."

DL capped the tourney and division title with a 14-3 pounding of Winnipeg South, by collecting 10 well-timed hits.

Connor McLeod, Logan Baker (three RBIs), Johnson and Ryan Berg each had two hits.

Post 15 opened the game up with an 11-run fifth inning, all coming with two outs on the board.

Knoll batted .400 in the tournament, going 6-15, and Johnson went 7-17 for a .411 average.

Tuesday's doubleheader against Moorhead was postponed due to a scheduling conflict.

DL will play in the Fargo Tournament Friday through Sunday and will open against Pierre, S.D., then face Winnipeg, Tri-City and Fargo.
