Detroit Lakes senior pitcher Callea Butz was stingy on giving out hits to the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines Tuesday, while the Lakers won the nightcap in walk-off fashion to complete the Mid-State Conference sweep.

Butz allowed just two hits in each of the two games, while the defense behind her did the job by committing just three errors total.

The sweep -- by the scores of 4-0 and 3-2 -- gives the Lakers a Mid-State record of 9-1 and only needs to split with Pequot Lakes Friday to earn the conference championship.

The wins also give DL an 11-5 record and pretty much seals up a top four seed for the Section 8-2A playoffs, which guarantees them a home playoff game.

"Callea really kept us in each game, she did a heck of a job," said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. "Our freshmen and sophomores are also playing well, which is helping us out."

After two errors in the first inning of the second game led to the Wolverines' lone two runs of the day, Butz kept mowing the W-DC batters down and didn't allow a runner past second the remainder of the game.

Meanwhile, W-DC pitcher Kelly DeFoe kept DL's bats at bay by tossing a no-hitter into the seventh inning.

But a leadoff single by pinch hitter Jenna Lamb in the bottom of the seventh sparked the much-needed rally.

Brianna Seebold followed with a single, while senior shortstop Shayna Dugger broke out of a mini-slump with a liner down first-base line for a huge two-run single to tie the game.

She took third on an Amalea Branden single and eventually scored the winning run on a DeFoe's wild pitch to end the game.

"That win didn't only show character of the girls, but it also showed anything can happen and you need to play all seven innings," Kirchner said.

The win was DL's first walk-off one of the season.

Butz controlled the opening game from the first to the last pitch, by striking out seven and walking just three.

No W-DC runner advanced past second base, while the Laker defense made all the plays.

"The defense is making all the routine plays and that's what wins you games," Kirchner said.

The bottom of the order came up in the clutch, as well, with senior Jalen Even knocking in the first run in the second inning, after Branden led off with a single and advance to third on a sacrifice bunt by Heather Ianiro and a walk by Amanda Young.

Even notched her second RBI of the game with a two-out single to drive in Ianiro, who also singled to lead off the frame.

Donna Wicker grabbed two RBIs with her single in the sixth to put DL up 4-0, as each of Ianiro and Young scored after singling.

The Lakers will play Pequot Lakes Friday at Snappy Park for a 4 p.m. start.
