DL Jaycees spring fundraiser set for April 6
Bean bags, beer and beach bums — say that five times fast … or just say it once while buying tickets for the Detroit Lakes Jaycee’s spring fundraiser on Saturday, April 6.
For the second year, Bean Bags, Beer and Beach Bums will take over the ballroom of the Holmes Theater, an idea that started last year as a way to pay for the Jaycees’ Trolley makeover.
“But it was so successful that we thought we might as well bring it back again this year as a spring fundraiser,” said Detroit Lakes Jaycee Nick Omberg, who says last year they had to turn people away from the tournament because they hadn’t expected such a big response.
“So this year, we’re set up to handle a lot more,” said Omberg, who hopes for at least 100 people to make up two-person teams for the bean bag tournament.
And since ‘Beach Bums’ are part of the theme, dress for the evening will be rather … cool.
“We encourage people to come in shorts, flip flops, maybe bring a lawn chair…” said Omberg, “We’re trying to get as spring as we can get, even with three feet of snow on the ground.”
Rockstar DJ will be providing the tunes, while the NCAA basketball tournament will be down to the Final Four and up on the big screens of the Holmes Theater ballroom.
Tickets for Bean Bags, Beer and Beach Bums are $20, and that buys entrance into the event, into the beanbag tournament, dinner and one drink.
The fun starts at 5 p.m. and while tickets can only be purchased at the door, there is an option for party-goers to forego the bean bag tournament and simply enjoy the rest of the evening. This option is $15 instead of $20.
Bleachers will be providing the cash bar, while other area businesses are providing prizes throughout the evening, including pontoon rentals from J& K, a stay at the Holiday Inn on the Lake, rounds of golf, coolers t-shirts and various gift certificates.
Money raised from the event will go to the Detroit Lakes Jaycees, who will be turning those funds around to begin planning for the 2013 Water Carnival, which provides 10 days packed full of summer fun in July 12-21.
And although that may seem like an entire world away right now, it’s actually only a few months down the road.
And if bean bags, beer and beach bums aren’t a reminder of what’s just around the corner, nothing is.
“I think when people think of the Jaycees they think of summer, they think of Water Carnival, and I think right now people are just sick of snow,” said Omberg. “This is just a good way to come out and raise some money for the Jaycees and have a really good time doing it.”
