Tuesday was the time for the younger and junior varsity tracksters to shine and not be in the shadow of the varsity athletes, during the Fergus Falls Invite.

The Lakers team Tuesday consisted of all the junior varsity and junior high competitors, who ran up against 10 other varsity teams.

Considering those odds, the Lakers didn't fair bad, with several solid performances coming from the future of the program.

"It was a good situation in that it gave our junior varsity kids the opportunity to be the big dogs," said DL head girls' coach Mike Labine. "They all competed hard and ran well."

DL boys' hurdler Austin Clem placed well, by taking fifth in both the 100 and 300 hurdles with times of 19.36 and 47.49, respectively.

"Those are some impressive places," said DL head boys' coach Steve Zamzo.

Riley Olson hit a personal-best in the high jump with a 5-04 for sixth, as well.

"That's a potential varsity (height)," Zamzo said. "Overall, the kids were not wide-eyed and it gave them the experience and confidence to compete on the varsity level. It confirmed to them that they are good athletes."

In the distance for the girls, Katie Larson was fifth with a 6:19.93, with a host of other Lakers running strong in a stiff wind.

"It was a horrible wind and they ran times like they did four days ago," Labine added.

In the long jump, DL took fifth and sixth with Allison Berg at 15-0 and Emily Payne at 14-07.

Megan Lindquist impressed in the high jump with a finish of third at a height of 4-08.

"Our throwers also did well," Labine included. "We've brought a full junior varsity team to a varsity meet in the past, but this is the first time we had a very solid performance.

"These kids practice as much as the varsity athletes and they deserve a chance to shine, too."

The Lakers were in Moorhead Friday, and will travel to Wadena-Deer Creek Thursday for a 4 p.m. start.
