DL looks to add momentum after first win of the season over TRF

Email News Alerts

The wheels are back on the tracks for the Detroit Lakes football team, after its 27-14 win over Thief River Falls Friday.

The Lakers (1-1) established their ground game for their first win of the season, as senior fullback Dustin Rietsema finished with 96 yards on 20 carries and senior quarterback Reed Oistad racked up 71 yards on 19 carries and 107 passing yards, with one touchdown and an interception.

Each facet of DL's game showed improvement from a 28-14 loss to Mankato East in week one, and that's exactly what Laker head coach Flint Motschenbacher wanted to see from his young team.

The play of the defense also showed improvement, as the unit held Thief River Falls out of the end zone on several crucial Prowler drives.

"We made another goal-line stand, which was nice, and outside of a couple drives Thief River Falls had, our defense played with consistency," Motschenbacher said. "As a unit, the defense is getting better."

With opposing defenses keying on Rietsema and the interior rushing attack of the Lakers, that has enabled Oistad to find options on the perimeter.

That was apparent on a boot play in the second quarter, where Oistad rolled right and found Rietsema on a short pass. The fullback turned the play into a 30-yard pickup to kickstart the offense, which went on to score 21 points in that quarter alone.

"With teams keying on Dustin, it has opened some other things up for us," Motschenbacher said.

The perimeter was open on senior slotback Max Knoll's nine-yard run, in which Oistad was able to pitch the ball to the shifty runner around left end.

With some downfield blocking help by sophomore wide receiver Josh Stalberger, Knoll was able to run basically unimpeded for six points.

"Our wide receivers have been blocking well and that's important," Motschenbacher said.

The offensive line -- where obviously blocking is the focal point -- has made strides for the Lakers as well.

Junior returner Pat Williams has been solid and senior left guard Rob Richards has done his job well also, the DL coach said.

"We are still looking for improvement from our other linemen, which is coming," said Motschenbacher.

The next test will be Friday in DL's second North Country Conference game, when Grand Rapids visits town.

The Thunderhawks have struggled out of the gate, going 0-2 against some top competition in Farmington and Duluth East.

"They've played some tough teams, so it's difficult to see what they are capable of doing offensively and defensively," Motschenbacher said.

Grand Rapids also runs the Wing T offense, similar to what Thief River Falls runs, and relies on sweeps and misdirection to keep defenses off balanced.

"They run a lot of formations to put a lot of pressure on defenses," Motschenbacher said. "This is another big conference game."

Rietsema enters the game as the team's leading rusher, with 155 yards on 30 carries (5.2 yards per carry), while Oistad has 174 yards passing, having gone 9-28 with two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Friday at Mollberg Field.
