DL man charged with DWI after driving wrong way down Highway 59
A Detroit Lakes man has been charged in Becker County District Court with two felony counts of driving while intoxicated.
Steven Gerald Kohler, 50, of 32989 Birch St., Detroit Lakes, was charged in connection with a Dec. 6 incident on Highway 59 outside Detroit Lakes.
A sheriff's deputy was on patrol when he received a report of a vehicle traveling south in the northbound lane of the highway, and subsequently learned that the vehicle had rolled into the ditch. The deputy discovered that the vehicle had then been driven out of the ditch and continued to travel southbound on the highway, where he was able to locate it and initiate a traffic stop.
The driver appeared to have red, bloodshot, watery eyes and slurred speech, performed poorly or failed several field sobriety tests, and submitted to a preliminary breath test that showed a result of .16 percent.
Kohler has three prior DWI convictions, with all of them occurring between 2003-09. He has been released on $5,000 bond pending his next court appearance, at a Tuesday Rule 8 hearing.
