DL man gets stayed sentence for felony DWI
A Detroit Lakes man has been sentenced in Becker County District Court on a felony count of driving while intoxicated.
Steven Gerald Kohler, 51, of 32989 Birch St., Detroit Lakes, was given a 42-month prison sentence, stayed on conditions including completion of a 180-day jail sentence and up to seven years of supervised probation. He was also ordered to pay $1,615 in court fines and fees.
A second felony DWI charge was dismissed at sentencing.
Kohler was originally charged in connection with a Dec. 6 incident on Highway 59 outside Detroit Lakes.
A sheriff’s deputy was on patrol when he received a report of a vehicle traveling south in the northbound lane of the highway, and subsequently learned that the vehicle had rolled into the ditch.
The deputy discovered that the vehicle had then been driven out of the ditch and continued to travel southbound on the highway, where he was able to locate it and initiate a traffic stop.
The driver appeared to have red, bloodshot, watery eyes and slurred speech, performed poorly or failed several field sobriety tests, and submitted to a preliminary breath test that showed a result of .16 percent.
Kohler has three prior DWI convictions on his record, with all of them occurring between 2003-09.
