DL man sentenced for 4th DWI
A Detroit Lakes man was sentenced last week in Becker County District Court on a felony charge of first degree driving while intoxicated.
Brandon Kenneth Newell, 29, of 19085 County Road 131, Detroit Lakes, was charged in connection with a Feb. 7 traffic incident in Becker County, in which officers witnessed him throwing a passenger out of the vehicle he was driving, then stopping farther down the road and fleeing the vehicle on foot. Upon apprehension, officers detected an odor of alcohol on his breath, and he was placed under arrest. He had three previous DWI convictions on his record at the time of his arrest.
Newell was sentenced to 48 months in prison, stayed on condition that he serve seven years of supervised probation, 180 days in jail (with 118 days credit for time already served since his arrest), and pay $1,620 in court fines and fees.
