DL Middle School Band Concert is this Thursday
The Detroit Lakes Middle School Bands will present their first concert of the school year in their Fall Band Concert on Thursday, Nov. 15.
The sixth, seventh, and eighth grade bands will perform an eclectic variety of music. Included will be marches -- both traditional and concert, overtures, slow tunes, popular and rock selections, movie soundtracks, selections from musicals, and original programmatic band compositions.
Leading off the program will be the sixth grade band. Their selections include: "Starship One: Perseus and the Sea Monster," which is a programmatic work musically depicting the Greek god Perseus as he battles the creature, the sea monster. The "New World Symphony" follows, written by classical composer Antonin Dvorak. A rock tune in "Knock Before Rock" closes the sixth grade band's portion.
Next up will be the seventh grade band. They will be performing "Hogan's Heroes March," theme song from the television series, followed by "For Honor, For Country," a powerful new work of inspiring nature about instilling pride in our nation. Next up is the popular theme song from the classic movie, "The Magnificent Seven," followed by "Annie," and "Queenwood Overture".
Closing the performance is the eighth grade band. They will beginwith "Hammerfest Concert March;" followed by "Sands of the Sahara." This new work is a musical portrayal of the environment at the Sahara desert. "Ballad for Band," "Holiday" (from the musical "American Idiot") and "Pirates of the Caribbean" will follow.
The bands are under the direction of Middle School band director Paul Dierkhising.
As the descriptions entail, there will be something of interest to please any and all tastes in music.
The performance will be given in the George Simson Middle School Auditorium and will begin at 7:30 p.m. The public is welcome to attend. There is no admission charge.
