The Detroit Lakes boys' tennis team's fast start to the 2010 season hit its first bump after splitting its home triangular Friday.

The Lakers handled Alexandria 5-2, while losing to a talented Thief River Falls squad 7-0, marking DL's record at 3-1.

In singles action versus the Cardinals, the Lakers went 3-1, including 2-1 in doubles play.

Thieris Galdino swept through No. 1 singles action with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Ben LeVahn, while seventh grader Alex Fondrick picked up his first varsity victory with a three-set win over Austin Storm by pulling out the decisive one 7-3.

Freshman Isaac Fondrick won his third singles match over Dustin Lee in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.

"We played very well and I was very pleased with the play of our No. 2 doubles team of Garret Duncan and Derick Brehm," said DL head coach Wade Johnson. "They played very aggressive tennis and it works well for those two."

The duo downed Trevor Granganet and Ryan Johnson by a pair of 6-3 set scores, while the No. 1 doubles team of Chad Hanson and Jesse Meyer won 6-2, 6-1.

"Hanson and Meyer combined for a dominating effort, as well," Johnson said.

The Prowlers were too overpowering for the Lakers, winning every match in straight sets.

Isaac Fondrick brought Fabian Turberg to a second-set tiebreaker, before losing 7-6 (11-9).

"Thief is an outstanding team and put together an impressive effort against our kids," Johnson said.

The Lakers will travel to Park Rapids for a Mid-State Conference game Thursday, starting at 4:30 p.m.
